Following a back injury earlier this month, William Saliba has received an update on his health from Arsenal boss Mikel Arteta
Prior to the international break, the French centre back was forced to leave the second leg of the Gunners’ Europa League round of 16 match against Sporting CP early.
Three days later, in Arsenal’s 4-1 victory over Crystal Palace at home, Rob Holding took Saliba’s position as the team hoped this would be a temporary fix. But Arteta acknowledged in a press conference before this weekend’s game against Leeds United that Saliba has not yet fully healed and is still some time away from rejoining the team.

“Back injuries are a little difficult because of how they change as a result of the load you apply to specific areas. Push it a little bit and see how he handles it. He is so eager to rejoin the squad.
Saliba’s current contract is scheduled to expire in 2024, and 90min understands that the two parties are still in contract negotiations with Arsenal. The Gunners are still optimistic that a deal will be reached soon because their top objectives right now are to sign Saliba and Bukayo Saka to long-term deals to complement Gabriel Martinelli’s lucrative extension.
