Mikel Arteta sets sights on defensive reinforcement with Matthijs De Ligt Pursuit

Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta is considering a January move for Bayern Munich’s Dutch leader, Matthijs De Ligt, for the purpose to strengthen his defensive lineup. According to Spanish publication Fichajes, Arteta regards the signing of De Ligt as critical to improving the Gunners’ backline.

Despite a number of recent defeats, Arsenal is still strongly in position for the Premier League crown this season. Arteta is looking to strengthen his squad during the winter transfer window with the goal to win their first domestic title since the Invincible season of 2003/04.

The North London club has displayed a propensity to make January moves in the past, as shown by the signings of Jakub Kiwior, Jorginho, and Leandro Trossard in 2023.

Arsenal’s defensive problems, exacerbated by crucial player injuries such as Jurrien Timber, Thomas Partey, and Takehiro Tomiyasu, have caused Arteta to prioritize defensive additions.

The imminent international responsibilities of Tomiyasu and Partey in early 2024 emphasize the importance of defensive cover. As a result, Arteta has set his sights on De Ligt, an intriguing Dutch defender who has struggled for playing time at Bayern Munich this season.

While Arteta’s contract with the Bundesliga champions continues until 2026, the 24-year-old is allegedly interested in a loan deal with a buy option in the summer.

However, Bayern Munich manager Thomas Tuchel may be reluctant to sell De Ligt during the winter transfer window so as to maintain squad depth for a challenging season on all fronts.

As Euro 2024 approaches, De Ligt desires to earn consistent playing time in order to cement his place in the Netherlands’ starting XI. As the January transfer window advances, Arsenal’s pursuit of the Dutch international promises to be an intriguing story.
