Arsenal are expecting to appoint Monchi as their technical director next month after the Spaniard quit his position with AS Roma last week.
It has not been long since the Serie A outfit got thrown out of the Champions League and their manager, Eusebio Di Francesco got sacked. Monchi decided to quit right after and is ready to join Unai Emery’s ranks at North London.
The duo has worked together at Sevilla before and Monchi gained the reputation as one of the masterminds in player transfers. While Emery led the La Liga outfit to 3 consecutive Europa League titles, the 50-year-old former goalkeeper made the club millions of pounds in profits.
He signed Dani Alves for £150,000 from Esporte Club Bahia and sold him to Barcelona for £32million. Ivan Rakitic was signed from Schalke for £2m and was sold for £16m. Seydou Keita, who was brought in from Lens for £9m was sold for £13m, both to Barcelona.
Monchi, whose real name is Ramón Rodríguez Verdejo had told Sevilla newspaper, Estadio Deportivo, “I have worked with Unai in a magnificent way. We had an excellent relationship and achieved unimaginable goals. I would like to work with him again because he is a great coach and sports directors like good coaches. But I’ve had many good coaches.”
