Mustafi is often criticized by sections of fans for his performances in the Gunners shirt.

Now, Unai Emery has hinted that he could leave the club this month.

Shkodran Mustafi has been linked with Monaco and could still move with the European transfer window open throughout August.

The Germany international remains the most expensive defender in the club’s history but has received some strong criticism since arriving in 2016 from Valencia.

Arsenal boss Emery has rarely used the German defender during pre-season, with Calum Chambers now ahead of him in the pecking order. The 27-year-old was even booed by the fans when coming off the bench during the Emirates Cup defeat to Lyon.

As a result, Emery has now revealed that he has held talks with the defender regarding a potential Emirates exit in the coming weeks.

“I spoke with him when we finished last season. I spoke with him when we started the pre-season and I spoke with him also two weeks ago saying maybe there was the possibility he can leave.

“I think being more competitive we can respond better in the season. Some players maybe can play less with that situation and they will be allowed to leave. But that decision is taken with the player, with the club and with the team”, the boss revealed.

The Gunners have been able to sign David Luiz from Chelsea during the last day of the transfer window, meaning that the 27-year-old’s time at the club is coming to an end, since he is no longer needed even as cover.
