Arsenal could use some help in the centre-back and wing departments but Unai Emery is unable to recall either Calum Chambers or Reiss Nelson from their respective loan spells.

The former is spending the season out with Fulham and Nelson with TSG Hoffenheim. Both have done noticeably well this term to gain the affection of the Arsenal boss. If Emery had his way, the Spanish boss would immediately bring them back into the Emirates for the second half of the 2018/19 campaign.

After the Gunners’ 4-1 victory over Fulham last night, Emery said,  “We need defence also to take more balance and improve. We need to work. We need to prepare for the second half of the season. We need to do better in the second half of the season, tactically and we are going to do that.”

Arsenal are still 5 points off the Champions League qualification spots after their embarrassing 5-1 loss to Liverpool last weekend. The status quo remains that the club’s football is still very much a work-in-progress but Emery understands they need to improve immediately.

Manchester United are gaining momentum behind them with new caretaker boss, Ole Gunnar Solskjaer and Chelsea have already team improvements through Christian Pulisic’s transfer.

Chambers could have been an answer to Rob Holding’s season-ending injury and Nelson would have offered more spacing to the Arsenal forward line.
