Unai Emery's Reaction To Giroud Getting Picked For France Over Arsenal Star

Unai Emery respects Didier Deschamps’ decision to drop Alexandre Lacazette from the France national team squad.

The Arsenal striker has racked up a decent tally of 13 goals and 7 assists in 30 games this season, playing next to a scoring phenom like Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang. The 27-year-old had 14 goals in 32 games last term which was also his debut season in England.

Despite his obvious qualities on the pitch, Lacazette has not found a place in Les Blues squad since his days in the Ligue 1. The striker was the French top flight’s leading scorer with Lyon in 2014/15 and also had netted in 28 goals in the 2016/17 campaign.

All he could muster was a few reserve squad selections in the Euro 2016s. The striker was dropped completely for the much recent 2018 FIFA World Cup. It is unlikely that Lacazette will be called up for the Euro 2020 if he continues to be ignored for the tournament’s qualifiers.

Many fans are baffled by Deschamps’ decision, especially when a player like Olivier Giroud continues to have a regular spot while being a second string option at his own club.

However, Emery expressed a different point of view. He instead told RMC, “I respect Deschamps’ point of view. The aim is also that Lacazette constructs a consistency for himself and the necessary productivity to be able to make the French national team.

“The principal reason is that there is a lot of competition. But Lacazette, in time, I am convinced that he will return to the national team.”
