Veteran Chelsea Defender Might Be Arsenal's Best Chance To Improve Backline

Out-of-favour Chelsea defender, Gary Cahill continues to be included in trade rumours over a move to Arsenal.

The latest reports claim that Crystal Palace are hoping to offer the Gunners some competition in the final few days of the January transfer window.

However, with two starting centre-backs, Sokratis Papastathopoulos and Laurent Koscielny picking up serious injuries in the 1-3 FA Cup defeat to Manchester United last week, Unai Emery desperately needs to find players to fill into the vacant spots.

Cahill has previously stated his frustrations with the Maurizio Sarri management which has turned him into a sporadic piece rather than the regular figure he previously was under Antonio Conte.

The 33-year-old does not wish to be a backup piece at this stage of his career and is expected to make an exit from the Stamford Bridge soon. His links to a side like Arsenal certainly has stirred controversy among the fan bases of both clubs.

If the move were to fall through, the thought process is that the Blues would be helping their direct rival and Arsenal would be adding a veteran defensive figure who has not performed well in the recent past.

Cahill’s contract is set to end after this season but an immediate move could allow Chelsea to extract some money out of his immediate sale.

Unai Emery have directed all his efforts in improving the Gunners’ attack this January. In the final minutes of the transfer window, the 61-cap England international might he best shot at strengthening the backline.
