Unai Emery has given Mesut Ozil some advice – fight for your spot or continue riding the bench.
The German midfielder was dropped for Arsenal’s Europa League win over Standard Liege on Thursday. He was not included even as a substitute as the Gunners cruised to a 4-0 victory at home.
When asked why Ozil was not involved in the European fixture, Emery said, “I am thinking every time to decide the best players for each match, and the best players in the squad to play and to help us. If I decided he is not in the squad, it’s because I think another player deserved it more.”
Emery was also posed the question regarding what Ozil must do to earn his spot back in the first-team to which he replied, “Continue working. Tomorrow [Friday], we have training, and Sunday we have another match and we are going to decide the same: the best team possible to achieve our target, which is to win on Sunday and adapt to the difficulty of Bournemouth.”
Reports have claimed this week that Arsenal are actively trying to move Ozil out of the Emirates next January. His outrageous wage bill is something the Gunners want to get rid of, especially when he is not even participating in games as regularly.
