Arsenal Defender To Real Sociedad Still A Possibility

A shocking bit of transfer rumour has resurfaced which would not please most Arsenal fans – Nacho Monreal to Real Sociedad.

The Gunners left-back was linked with a move back to Spain all summer, talks of which escalated once Kieran Tierney moved to the Emirates from Celtic.

However, Monreal got to start in both Premier League fixtures against Newcastle United and Burnley, even being named as captain in the last one. football.london claims that his contract situation has also been sorted with the Spaniard set to stay at the Emirates till next summer.

When asked about his potential move, Monreal earlier said, “That’s all rumours. I belong at Arsenal. I still have a contract. My idea is to stay here. It’s a great club and I feel really comfortable playing for Arsenal. My idea is to continue playing here.”

That should be enough to put all rumours to bed but Mundo Deportivo came back with a report that talks of a La Liga switch is still on the books. The Spanish news outlet claims that Monreal’s exit from North London could be finalised in a few hours.

If it were to happen, it would be one of the most foolish decisions by Arsenal – to let go of the veteran defender. Monreal is one of the last standing experienced players who is still vital to the club’s seasonal objectives.

While Kieran Tierney is a huge addition, he will need time to adjust and could use a senior mentor like Monreal. The other fact is Sead Kolasinac is simply not good enough to be even a second option. His defensive shortcomings makes it a huge risk to field him against quality opposition.

Arsenal fans should be hoping that this is just another harmless rumour which will fade away in the coming week.
