Ajax defender Jurrien Timber underwent medical on Friday.

The Dutch defender is set to join the North London giants in a £40million deal and will be Arsenal’s second major signing of the summer.

He completed a medical on Friday and his transfer will be announced next week.

Timber has been on the radar of several Premier League clubs including Manchester United.

Mikel Arteta is expected to convert the centre-half into a right-back and will compete with Ben White for a regular spot in the first team.

Dutch legend Jaap Stam is confident that Timber will thrive in Mikel Arteta’s setup.

He tells Charles Watts Football: “In Holland he’s been doing very well. This season due to circumstances he was not as impressive as last season, but you could still see the quality there.

“He’s very comfortable on the ball and he can create that extra man in midfield by carrying the ball forward. He’s very good in his positioning as well, his passing is very accurate and he has good technique. That’s the type of player that we all like in Holland.”
