Kevin Campbell laid out exactly why Mikel Arteta won’t be sacked from his job.
Despite a poor season at North London, the Spaniard is expected to continue in his role next season.
Arteta has the backing of the current owners – Kroenke Sports Enterprise and is already planning for the summer transfer window. Of course, majority of the fans are not on board with this decision.
“Winning a trophy does help,” Campbell told Football Insider correspondent Dylan Childs. “But that was last season. Football is all about ‘what have you done for me lately’?
“Not ‘you won a cup so you get extra time’. I believe the ownership has a plan for Mikel Arteta.
“That is why he won’t be sacked. Because if he is sacked then the new manager would still need the money to recruit.”
Arteta’s FA Cup triumph put him on the map in terms of promising managerial candidates. However, this season has been far from ideal. Arsenal are out of Europe for the first time in over decades and is likely to finish near the 10th spot of the Premier League.
Whatever plan the owner has with Arteta, he will need significant backing in the tranfer market. Without his own breed of players, it is unusual to expect any results out of him.
