5. Wellington Silva
Wellington Silva was signed in January 2010 as an energising prospect from Brazilian outfit Fluminense. After 6 loan spells to various teams, the winger was sold back to the club he was bought from in 2016.
“He’s absolutely stunning to watch,” said Arsene Wenger while preparing to send Wellington on his sixth loan move to Bolton Wanderers. At least this move would be little closer to home after five previous stints in Spain.
Arsenal fans never had the chance to understand Wenger’s vision for the Brazilian since he never featured for the Gunners first team. Arsenal retained a £3.5m buy-back option when they sold the 26-year-old back to Fluminense.
At one point in 2017, Wenger even thought about activating the clause a when Silva started picking up interest from Ligue 1 outfit, Bordeaux. Arsenal was looking to make a quick £1.5m profit but the French side opted out of the move.
4. Ismael Bennacer – Current Arsenal Players Sold With Buy-Back Clause
Arsenal are always producing top-pedigree talents from their academy but hardly any of them have gotten the chance to break through to the senior side in recent times.
Ismael Bennacer is one of the prodigies who had to move elsewhere to prove his worth. And the midfielder has been turning heads in the Serie A, playing for Empoli. He signed for Arsenal as a teenager in 2015 and was sold off to the Italian outfit in 2017 for £900,000.
Bennacer never got the chance to break into the Gunners senior squad, even after making his senior debut in a League Cup match against Sheffield Wednesday. The 21-year-old spent a season out on loan with Tours in the Ligue 2, making 16 appearances and scoring 1 goal.
He has, however, established himself as a regular in Aurelio Andreazolli’s side and has made 37 appearances in the 2018/19 campaign.
Why Arsenal should buy Bennacer back
Aaron Ramsey is about to leave behind a giant vacuum in the Gunners midfield which, frankly, neither Mesut Ozil nor the new boy, Matteo Guendouzi will be able to fill up. Unai Emery’s hands are expected to be full this summer in trying to find able bodies in defence, especially within his budget constraints.
Setting aside another £40m for a replacement does not seem to be a realistic option. Bennacer has developed into a combative central presence with the versatility to appear in offensive positions as well.
With Arsenal’s buy-back clause, not only will he arrive for cheap he could also be an upgrade to Granit Xhaka (the Swiss international has not exactly grown into the star fans thought he would).
The only problem at this stage seems to be Napoli and Lyon, both of whom have registered serious interest in the Algerian international.

3. Francis Coquelin
It was a shock transfer back in January 2018 when Arsenal sold Francis Coquelin off to Valencia for €14m. The defensive midfielder was with the Gunners for 10 years and made 160 appearances for the senior side.
Not that his departure was enough of a surprise but almost everyone was taken aback when they heard Coquelin’s release clause. The Oranges had inserted an option to only sell the player for €80m.
2. Serge Gnabry
If there is one player who Arsenal fans would want to have back in the club, it is Serge Gnabry.
The German winger, who flew to a different country as a 16-year-old and gave his heart to the North Londoners was sold off to Werder Bremen in 2016 for next to nothing. And now he is kissing his Bundesliga winner’s medal in a Bayern Munich shirt.
At a time when the club is yearning for playmaking wingers like him, the fans can feel nothing but regret over Gnabry. He stayed at North London for 4 seasons during which he made 18 appearances for the senior side, contributing with a single goal and 2 assists.
In the 2013/14 season when Theo Walcott was injured, Wenger gave Gnabry a shot in the first team. He was just coming into his own and even scored a crucial goal against Swansea City. His impressive bouts earned him a nomination to the Golden Boy award and also a five-year contract extension.
Unfortunately, the midfielder picked up a knee injury in the summer and had to miss almost the entire next season. After a loan to West Bromwich Albion, he was given up to Werder Bremen for only £5m.
Gnabry’s rise to stardom

His release clause was worth around £6.5m which Arsenal could have easily activated but instead, let Bayern swoop him up. The Bavarians loaned him out to Hoffenheim the first season and now have received a fully developed winger capable of replacing Frank Ribery or Arjen Robben on either of the flanks.
1. Cesc Fabregas
Cesc Fabregas is widely remembered at North London as a prolific midfielder at a very young age. When he was sold off to Barcelona in 2011 for £35m, Arsene Wenger was careful enough to insert a buy-back clause into the deal.
However, when the time came as Fabregas wanted a move out of Camp Nou, the Gunners decided to waive their rights and let Chelsea pick him up for £30m in 2014.
