After spending 7 seasons with Bayer Leverkusen in the Bundesliga, Bernd Leno was signed by Arsenal in the summer of 2018 for £22.5m.

The German goalkeeper made a name for himself in his home country and has even recorded 6 caps for the senior national side. He currently the third choice keeper for the European nation behind Bayern Munich’s Manuel Neuer and Barcelona’s Ander ter Stegen.

Leno did have to prove his worth to Unai Emery and to the rest of Arsenal fans before getting handed over the number one spot ahead of Petr Cech.

At 27 years old, Leno has the opportunity to become an important figure in the Gunners line-up. He will certainly be taking note of his compatriot, Jens Lehmann’s success during his time at North London.

Petr Cech was signed by Arsenal back in July 2015 for £10m on a 4-year contract. The veteran shot-stopper wanted regular minutes on the pitch but was denied that at Chelsea by the presence of Thibaut Courtois.

At the time, the transfer made a lot of noise among the Gunners fans for signing a player from a rival outfit but no one had any doubts over Cech’s talents in between the sticks.

Upon his arrival, Cech tweeted, “Last summer, things changed and I understood I was no longer the first-choice keeper, but I felt it was not the right time for me to go. During the season it became clear that my situation would not improve and, as I know I am not at the stage of my career where I want to be on the bench, I made my decision to move on and look for new challenges.”

Cech’s Career

After making close to 500 appearances for Chelsea in 11 years he came into the Emirates to quickly be known as a defensive force. He immediately became the starting keeper with Wojciech Szczęsny sold off to Juventus.

Now, we are in the 4th year of his contract and Cech has already announced his retirement after the 2018/19 campaign. The highly admired goalkeeper has collected 51 clean sheets in 132 appearances for Arsenal.

At 36 years old he continues to be a fully focused professional and has also set a benchmark for all aspiring goalkeepers in the Premier League.

Iliev played in the Belasica youth team in 2012 before switching to Arsenal in 2012. He joined the Gunners youth ranks and immediately got to feature for the U18 side.

He currently plays for the Arsenal U23 squad and has never made an appearance for the club’s senior side. The 24-year-old has a Bulgarian passport but he has represented Northern Macedonia at various youth levels.

Currently with only Petr Cech and Bernd Leno registered in the goalkeeping position under Unai Emery, Iliev is eligible to appear for the senior side if the aforementioned duo gets injured or suspended.

It is unclear whether Iliev will continue at Arsenal beyond this season with his contract coming to an end.

Arsenal Goalkeepers 2019 David OspinaDavid Ospina is currently on loan for the entire 2018/19 season. He has impressed during his 19 appearances for Napoli this term but the 30-year-old has still not been guaranteed a starting spot by Carlo Ancelotti.

Currently, it is being speculated that the Serie A outfit is simply stalling on their decision to sign the goalkeeper permanently from Arsenal. The loan agreement has a buy-back clause worth £4m.

Ospina himself is reportedly happy in the South of Italy but his future depends on that of his immediate employers, not his parent club.

Arsenal Goalkeepers 2019 MartinezEmiliano Martinez is a product of the Arsenal youth academy and was sent out on loan to Reading in January 2019.

The 26-year-old has been putting in good performances on a regular basis to make himself noticeable to Unai Emery. He is looking forward to replacing Cech in the number 2 spot at Arsenal next season.

Martinez has struggled to establish himself in the Gunners senior squad, making only 6 appearances over the past 7 seasons with the side.

However, the Argentine has picked up a lot of experience through loan spells with Oxford United, Sheffield Wednesday, Rotherham United, Wolves and Getafe.
