Lucas Torreira Reacts To Losing Starting Spot At Arsenal

Lucas Torreira is not against Unai Emery’s decision to bench him and is ready to work his way back to the starting XI.

The Uruguay international hit the ground running when he arrived last summer but has falled out of his usual place at Arsenal.

“All players want to play, they obviously want to be in the starting XI – that’s completely normal. But that’s not something that depends on me,” Torreira said. “It’s down to the coach to make those decisions and really I have to respect that. Right now it’s about not giving up.

“You have to continue working hard and whether I’m playing in the starting XI or from the bench I want to give my all for the team. That’s the kind of player I am. I like to give 100 per cent for the shirt to help my team-mates and to give the fans something to cheer about.”

Emery has allowed Joe Willock to carve out a spot for himself in the senior squad after the youngster impressed in pre-season. Guendouzi’s metoric rise has also hampered Torreira’s chances after Granit Xhaka got named as captain.

In an ideal scenario, Arsenal fans would like to see the trio of Guendouzi, Torreira and Ceballos working together in the midfield trio but Unai Emery is still uncertain about his best midfield combination.
